Prospect Local Environment Group (PLEG) had its beginnings in 2006 after a suggestion from some former members of the Prospect Nuclear Free Zone Campaign (1983-1985) to start a new group called Prospect Residents for Forum for Environmental Responsibility Inc (PREFER).
In 2008, after working on the formation of the organisation with a constitution, its Inaugural Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday 9th November 2008. The inaugural Office Bearers and Committee were elected until the next AGM in 2009:
Chairperson - Kevin Sprajcer
Treasurer - Chris Hannaford
Minutes Secretary - Carole Grubisa
Ordinary Committee Members:
- Jenny Smith
- Lindy Neilson
- Grace Fitzpatrick
- Tiana Della Putta
- Kristina Barnett
This was followed by a workshop to develop a community environmental action plan. Approximately 90 local residents and invited experts contributed ideas in round table discussions to list achievable local community environmental actions, focusing around three major themes, local food, local energy, local transport:
• Local Food – to ensure we reduce food miles and embodied energy and water in food
• Local Transport – to ensure that we travel sustainably and encourage Council to advocate for appropriate transport schemes
• Local Energy – develop initiatives with the community and government to encourage energy conservation and local generation.
From a planning session in 2015, the major themes were expanded to include Local Recycling:
• ‘Local Energy, Local Food, Local Recycling, Local Transport’
On 23 March 2015, it had a revised constitution and an official change of name to Prospect Local Environment Group Inc.
