"Ditch the Plastic"

Plastic Free July

Want to know what happens to your items in your kerbside recycling bin (yellow bin) in the City of Prospect?

City of Prospect’s recycling is collected by East Waste and delivered to the Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA) for processing.  NAMWA's video that shows what happens to your items after they are put into your kerbside recycling bin: https://youtu.be/-_DlY28EMZc. (Around 80% of all recovered recycling streams are recycled in South Australia and interstate. NAMWA has made a commitment to have 100% recycled within Australia by 2020. This will mean that none of  City of Prospect’s   recyclable resources will be sent overseas after 2020)

Find online here a  guide to Plastic Free Shopping in Adelaide and a mind-map on ways to reduce plastic use from various parts of your life.
Tips on reducing your plastic consumption

Learn how to reduce your everyday waste is to eliminate single-use plastic like plastic bags, straws and water bottles - the most common waste collected in the environment.  See some of our photos with tips below.

Look for ways to make your family events and gifts more sustainable and environmentally friendly!

  • Say 'no' to plastic shopping bag, and plastic straws.
  • Buy long-life reusable drink bottle or ‘keep’ cup and keep in your bag, at work and home.
  • Buy in bulk to use less packaging (instead of single-serve packs).
  • Buy fewer products (look for the same cleaners to use on mirrors, tiles and showers)
  • Cut back on chemicals for cleaning and use an organic alternative that are plant-based and biodegradable (free of chlorine bleach, aerosol propellants and antibacterial agents).
  • Choose re-used or recycled products and support the recycling industry.
Order your drink without a straw
Use natural fibre & recycled material shopping bags
Choose fruit & vegetables with no plastic wrap/containers
